What Is School Psychology?
- A school psychologist works within the educational system to help children with emotional, social and academic issues. The goal of school psychology is to collaborate with parents, teachers, and students to promote a healthy learning environment that focuses on the needs of children.
- School psychologists work with individual students and groups of students to deal with behavioural problems, academic difficulties, disabilities and other issues. They also work with teachers and parents to develop techniques to deal with home and classroom behaviour.
- School psychologists are trained in both psychology and education. They address the educational, emotional, social, and behavioural challenges that many children, and young adults experience during the schooling years.
- They apply their understanding of human development, psychopathology, learning theories, the principles of effective instruction and the impact of parent and family functioning to help children and adolescents with emotional, behavioural and learning problems such as LD, ADHD.
- They consult with teachers, other school personnel, physicians and related professionals about student concerns They provide professional development to teachers and other school personnel on topics such as remedial instruction, positive behavior intervention programming and carry out individual, group, and family counseling.
