Academics

PP-1 and 2 made a visit to the Nehru Zoological Park on 5 February in connection with the theme of nature.

Seetha Kiran, the Principal and Regional Director of DAV Public School visited our school on 4 February 2004, shared her wisdom with the secondary teachers and conducted an interactive session with the board batch of 2005.

The Headmistress, Mrs C Adilakshmi attended a workshop from the 17 january to 19 january at Prem Tinsulanonda Centre for International Education at Chiang Mai, Thailand. This workshop was conducted by Mrs Justine Smith and Mrs Christine Gilliland regarding a new Assessment programme. Over 10 schools in the Asia-pacific region, following the IB curriculum participated.

Classes VIII and IX along with Mr Johnson George, Ms Damayanti Mukherjee, Ms Fatima Shikoh, and Ms Sucharita Ray went for a trip to Aashirwad ( A Residential Transit School for Child-Workers) at Kukatpally on 20 February. Oakridge, as part of its broader community service commitment, has been associated with this institution, it was an opportunity for us to interact and empathise with children, our age group, yet of a different social setting.

We were timidly welcomed on arrival and clambered up the stairs and seated ourselves on the floor along with the kids in blue. All the chitchat among and between the Oakridgers and the kids of Aashirwad ended when Mr Suman, the Principal of the school spoke to us about the history and goal of Aashirwad. He told us that they were providing children with the much needed education that they had lost during their years as child labour. He emphasized that the space and infrastructure they required was still not adequate but the education was.

We took an oath against child labour and then Aashirwad's Principal invited some of our students to match talents with that of the Aashirwad students. The star of the day was an Aashirwad student named Srinivas who was well on hisway to becoming a professional in dancing. Today, thanks to the efforts made by Aashirwad, he goes to the Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts and his talent was evident.

Then the budding cricketers of Oakridge as well as of Aashirwad went to play a cricket match outside while the rest stayed inside for an entharalling game of Antakshari. The match ended in a draw. Though the Oakridgers looked like they would sweep away another victory, the determined Aashirwad team didn't lose hope and chased a hefty 27 runs off 30 deliveries.

While the cricket match was going on, everyone was singing and dancing on the first floor. Four teams had a tough but friendly contest of Antakshari and then a round of dancing on great numbers with Srinivas as the lead.

Unfortunately time ran out and we had to leave. It was an educative and touching experience and when the bus rolled school wards, it was not pity but admiration that filled our hearts as we reflected upon the grit of these children, who started out with so little from life yet have the courage to challenge life and vow to 'drink it to the less'.

The Transit of Venus

On the morning of March 26, Oakridgers of classes IV,V,VIII and IX were taken to the multi-purpose hall to watch on interesting presentation by Mr Y Ravi Kiron, Secretary of Association of Hyderabad Amateur Astronomers (AHAA). We also did an interesting experiment on the sun-dial.

Our mission for the day was to find out the distance between the sun and the earth, which is possible ONLY during the Transit of Venus. The Transit of Venus is a once in a lifetime event during which the silhouette of the planet Venus crosses the face of the sun as seen from the earth. It occurs every 120 years.

You can witness this rare occasion on the 8 June 2004.

The experiment was conducted between 11:00 am and 02.30 pm. Mr.Ravi Kiron told us a lot about our universe and included a Power Point presentation. Though it was sweltering hot, we did enjoy it because we felt it our duty to know about our own solar system. We started out by determining the radius of the earth using the measures of the shadows cast by the mini sun dials we had used earlier in the day. In the middle we had a lunch break after which we did the calculations.

The Transit of Venus most of us think, will be an experience to remember as there is no one alive on the face of the earth right now who has witnesses this phenomenon ever before. So try your best not to miss this opportunity on 8 June, 2004.

Learning out of This World

Have you ever woundered why the TV never fails to show a match or why if there is a natural calmity we get information instantly. It is due to the earth's artificial orbiters-satellites. These issues greatly excited the minds of the young Oakridgers of Class V as they studied the POI unit of 'Earth and Space' and in relation to this made a field trip to National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) at shadnagar on 11 February. Dr. Sudarshan, Head, Programme, Planning and Evaluation (NRSA) and also an Oakridge parent, not only helped us gain permission for the visit but also prepared all the visitors through a Power Point presentation a day earlier.

We were visibly animated as we boarded the bus on that chilly February morning with out Headmistress, Mrs C Adilakshmi and our teachers Ms Ratna Bhowmick, Mrs. Y Padmasree, Mrs V Prasuna and Mr Sreedhar. After a journey of an hour and a half the disc like structures in the distance announced the approach of our destinatiion. NRSA is a branch of the Department; of Space devoted to acquisition, processing and dissemination o remote sensing data. Our guide, a scientist himself, showed as different computers processing various data downloaded primarily from Indian satellites IRS-1A and 1B as well as from Landsat(USA). The data collated by NRSA is used by various government agencies for the purposes of ground water targeting, flood mapping and damage assessment, soil mapping, crop estimation, watershed management, ocean studies amongst others. As we toured, we observed the advanced computers indicating positions of satellites and their movement paths, charts showing various cameras fitted in the satellites and the live pictures of earth transmitted by a satellite. We comprehended first hand how weather forecasts are updated and maps are graphed. Our questing minds thirsted for information that our guide tirelessly and graciously provided us with.

It was an opportunity of a lifetime that we, the 'Inquires' of Oakridge will treasure in our hearts.

Working with Puppets

On the 13th of February, the children of Class IV had a workshop in store for them. It was held in our school by Ms. Ratnamala Nari. She taught us about the different types of puppets, how to make puppets and how to use puppets. It was a fun activity. The children were divided into groups and they started working. Some of the children made mice, some made cats and some made water animals. Then they had to present a story with these puppets. The story was an Sharing the Planet. It was a very good story.

For the primary children, with regard to our their PYP (Primary Years Programme), a person named Mr. Ron Aucld and from Canada was going to come to our school. The children of Class IV thought it would be a good idea to show Mr. Ran their puppet show. And so they did. On the 18th of February they started practicing. This time they used the best puppets made by children. The narrator needed to change his voice to that of a bear and so the other children needed to change their voices to match different animals. Then the big day came. Everyone was nervous. No one wanted to think of the mistakes they would make in the play. First ;the children had their practice. At approximately 9:00 am Mr. Ron Aucldand came. We started the play. Things were going like they were planned to be. At the end of the play we had a picture with Mr. Ron. The children gasped for breath and got the nervousness out of them while the teachers wiped their foreheads. This was really an impressive teamwork
