The following is a sample lesson on "The Past and Present" for Classes II.

The Past and Present
Central Idea: The Past and Present share similarities & differences.
An inquiry into :	Lifestyles of people in the past Changes in lifestyles from past to present Influence of these changes on our lives
Teachers Questions :	If you were to go back 60 years from now, how would your life bein terms of clothes, food, housing etc.? How do you think life is different now? How did these changes make our life easier and the world smaller?
Students Questions :	If there were no e-mails and mobile phones, how could they communicate some urgent messages? Why are the old photographs and movies only in black and white? Was life very difficult in those days?

Finding out :
Visit Grandparents in the villages Visit to salarjung Museum Interviewing Grandparents/old people in the neighbourhood Children watching "Malgudi Days" by R.K.Narayan. Through this film children visualize the lifestyles of children 40-50 years ago - their way of dressing, the games they played, their schools, the houses they lived in and various activities of the family as a social unit.

Grandparent's day celebrations :	Grandparents visited the school and answered the querries of the students. Grandparents spoke about their younger days. They demonstrated some games like Spinning a top, pachees, Gilli Danda, five stones, marbles etc.

Group Task :	60 years hence how I imagine the transport system to be ! 60 years hence how I imagine the communication system to be !. 60 years hence how I imagine the a house would be !
Making Connections :
As a group, children make tables to show items used in the past and their modern day equivalents. For example, in the past the "stone grinder" was used and in the current day the "mixie" is used. Creating a T chart comparing and contrasting aspects of past and present.
Making Conclusion :
Students make their own concept maps. They are encouraged to verbalize and record the process to justify their maps and evaluate their own understanding.
