Academic Focus - Teaching Methodology - Sample Lesson

The following is a sample lesson on " Simple Machines" for Classes IV.
Simple Machines
Central Idea: Simple Machines
An inquiry into :
  • The simple machines we use in daily lives
  • Equipments that combine various simple machines
  • How we take care of our simple machines
Teachers Questions :
  • What is a simple machine?
  • How do simple machines affect our lives?
  • What happens to the machines if it is not used for a long time?
  • Are all simple machines we use in our daily lives simple machines?
  • How can we ensure that simple machines remain in proper condition?
Students Questions :
  • How do simple machines work?
  • What did primitive men do before they made simple machines?
  • What is a lever? How does it function?
  • How does an inclined plane function?
  • What is the difference between Simple machine and a complex machine?
Learning Stages
Tuning in :
  • Brain storming the students with various activities in the ground playing basket ball, tug of war running etc.
  • Assessing the prior knowledge through questioning about work ,force and energy and establishing a connection between the activities and force.
  • Doing various activities to get to a better understanding of simple machines.
  • Rotational activities on different types of forces.
  • Online activity on types of energy and cryptogram.
  • To elicit what simple machines are various situational examples were done in the class.
  • Experiment to show different types of Simple machines.
Finding out :
  • Visit to Birla planetarium.
  • Observing the simple machines that are used in day-to-day life.
  • Understanding the concept of complex machines in practical life through their usage.
Sorting Out :

Integration with Mathematics

  • Completing the Venn diagrams of push and pull.
  • Collecting the data of the number of different of simple machines at their home.
  • Solving the word problems ex: If it takes a crane twenty minutes to lift a load one hundred seventy-two feet, how long will it take the crane working at the same speed to lift the same load three hundred one feet?

Song of simple machines:

Integration with Arts

CHORUS: Work, work, I love work...
Making something move.
Simple Machines can help us work...
Get into the groove.

1. Down, down, pulling down...
works with gravity.
Pull down on the rope, the flag goes up...
it's called a PULLEY!

2. SCREWS, screws, screws help us
in getting our work done,
an inclined plane around a bar,
climbing them is fun.

3. A WEDGE is good to use,
holds open a door.
Makes an angle that's acute,
one side on the floor!

4. An AXLE turns a WHEEL,
sharpens pencils for me.
Bicycle, car, and train tires,
help us move quickly!

5. A LEVER is lots of fun,
just like a see- saw.
LEVERS can move up and down,
careful now, don't fall!

  • Making a windmill fan using drinking straw and glace papers.

Going Further :
Group Task :
  • Making complex machines using simple household materials, Mechano sets etc. Display of the work through concept charts and finished models.
Making Connections :
  • Students are able to understand the simple and complex machines and their work pattern. They learn to take care of machines and enhance their efficiency.
