Academic Focus - Assessment & Evaluation

Teaching Methodology Assessment & Evaluation

In conventional schools, marks or grades scored are the sole parameters to judge a student's progress. At Oakridge however, evaluation focuses on the child's all-round development.

In addition to end-of-topic tests and term-end trials (for classes IV to X), every child's contribution and achievements in doing project work and producing study material is also assessed.

Evaluation is done with our unique Touchstone system, which is designed to ensure that students are prepared for success in the exam called Life as well.

The Oakridge Touchstone System

The Oakridge Touchstone describes the progress that the student is making with regard to his/her learning and identifies areas for growth. It is a tool to enable parents, teachers, pupils and school administrators to reflect on strengths and challenges in a variety of learning areas.
The Touchstone focuses on skills, aptitude and attitudes required for the general all round development of a child's personality as well as achieving excellence in specific subjects and activities.

The Touchstone rating is supported by a continuous formative assessment done during the period. Students are also encouraged to do self-assessment and peer assessment in the primary segment. The 5point rating scale is denoted by colours as below:

Performance Standards:

Advanced The student demonstrates outstanding competence beyond what is expected for the class level at this time of the year. He/She can perform independently and apply his/her learning to new and different situations.

Proficient The student is competent and performs slightly above expected class level. He/She exhibits higher levels of skill and effort.

Standard The student is competent and performs to the expected class level. He/She can maintain his/her performance with little assistance from the teacher.

Emerging The student demonstrates limited ability and understanding of the concept/skill. He/She is dependent on the teacher and needs direct instructions.

Below standard The student's skills, effort and attitude are below class level expectation.

Though the Touchstone evaluation is time-consuming, it has the potential of reflecting where exactly a child stands in terms of individual academic subjects, individual co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and also overall personality development. The Touchstone is made available on CD and the internet too.
